Development of Bungambrawatha Creek, 1976 - 1981

This project began in 1976 because of an initiative run by Principal Mr Trevor Broomfield and Assistant Mr Graham Brown.  In June 1976, 600 native trees, shrubs and creepers were ordered, and planting began in July after the area was studied and cleared.  Years 2, 3 and 4 were invited to adopt an area to maintain, and years 5 and 6 were invited to elect major jobs that needed to be done.

Lavington Public School was awarded two grants, and these funds were used to purchase 6 three-man tents, log tables, seats, a display case and materials to build a bbq.

In 1978, earth works were undertaken to bulldoze a path and retaining wall.  Recycled materials were used where possible - stepping stones were cut from an unwanted log, crates were broken up to make stakes, bricks were used to create a pathway, rocks were collected from the area to create a rockery, the campfire pit was built from local stones, and over 200 railway sleepers were used to build the retaining wall in an effort to stop erosion in 1980.  To foster a caring attitude, and to learn about birds and animals, an animal shelter was built for children to bring in injured birds for care during spring, and a fitness track was established along the upper bounds of the natural area, which became part of the physical education program.

"Down the creek on a wet and mushy day was fun.  We had bare feet.  I slipped and fell, lucky for me Miss Ireland was next to me and caught me." Angela Waldner
"One day a boy asked his mother if he could go to the shop.  His mother said yes.  He went to get his bike then he heard a funny noise under the house.  He looked under then he saw a magpie.  He called him and he came to the boy.  He saw the magpie was very hungry.  So he got some water and worms and gave them to the magpie.  He looked after the magpie for three months.  After that he ran away to nature." Story by Ivan Rakitic
"Miss Fripp's class went down the creek looking for birds footprints.  When we found some we put a piece of carboard around the print and after that Miss Fripp put the plaster in.  We waited for them to set, then we took them out and took them to the class and washed them.  When they were washed some of them turned out really well.  Miss Fripp put them on a display shelf." Susanne Walters
"One day we went down to the creek while it was wet.  The creek was really flowing heavily and there was a bit of a waterfall.  There were mushrooms everywhere.  In the wild flower garden they were growing on the stepping stones in little cities."  Peter Bauerle

"Miss Ireland and a couple of boys found a lizard and called me over to see it.  They wanted me to hold the lizard, and I did.  The lizard's name is Frilled Neck Lizard.  They can puff up their stomach.  The creek is the most beautiful place in Lavington because we work on the creek most of the time.  The creek should be looked after." Rolf Lossow
"One day some children and I went down to the creek, and we decided to make some damper.  Then the children got some rocks and wood and then they dug a hole.  We put the rocks around the hole and lit the fire.  Some of the children made the damper with plain flour, water and salt mixed together.  Then we dug a hole in the ashes.  We then put the damper in the ashes, covered it over with ashes.  Chris, Tony and I got sticks and we were playing with the fire and Chris accidently stuck a hole in the damper.  After a while we ate the damper, and we saved some of it for the teachers.  We let the fire die down.  Then we went back to school." Story by Mark Eyers
"Last year in 1977 the natural science group camped down the creek.  They were most enjoyable nights.  It was a Thursday night.  The next morning was Friday and Miss Ireland and Miss Fripp made Milo.  Lisa Miller, Warren Baker, Michael Roberts, Susan Walters, Michael Fedorowich and Sheryn are in the photo with me."  Marnie Miller

"This is a picture of Graham Moore and Jamie Kankowski and Stuart Doubleday.  We are down the creek, helping to make Aboriginal bread.  In the picture we are breaking sticks into small pieces to put on the fire.  The fireplace is made of standing three tall sticks against each other.  A wire hangs in the middle to tie the pot to."  Stuart Doubleday
