About our school

Welcome to Lavington Public School!

At Lavington Public School, our vision is to deliver sustained and measurable whole school improvement.  To do this, we aim to deliver excellence in evidence-based approaches to learning and teaching.

Lavington Public School currently has approximately 406 students, from Kindergarten to Year 6, and over 53 staff.

Our students come from a diverse community, with families primarily coming from a suburban background, with a nearby rural influence. Our families have a broad variety of socioeconomic status, cultural and linguistic backgrounds and family configurations.

All students receive educational experiences and learning opportunities that foster high expectations, inspiring students to achieve their potential.

Lavington Public School is committed to offering a quality education for all students, from dedicated staff, in a stimulating and caring environment.

The school has many programs for your children to be involved in, including a successful dance program, choir, public speaking programs, PSSA Sport, a budding music program, virtual opportunity class, a strong technology focus and an active Student Representative Council. Lavington has always been a strong sporting school offering a wide variety of sporting participation and skill development opportunities.  We are also a Positive Behaviour for Learning school and deliver consistency in our approaches to classroom and playground behaviour management.

The school is set in spacious and well-tended grounds and is continually developing its infrastructure to ensure that students learn in a pleasant and engaging environment where teaching and learning thrive!

At Lavington Public School we strive to:

  • realise the full potential of each student by developing a curricula of skills, attitudes and understandings which are flexible, relevant and meaningful to students of different ages and stages of learning,
  • foster an atmosphere of respect – for and between, the school, the child and the home, and
  • equip the child to deal with the demands of a changing society.

A greater understanding between parent and child can be achieved through:

  • personal discussions with teachers, Assistant Principals and the Principal.  The Principal and Assistant Principals are available for interviews on all matters relating to student guidance, preferably by appointment.  Always see your classroom teacher as your first point of call,
  • attending school functions arranged for parent participation,
  • reading the school newsletter that is available on the school website, Facebook page and the Sentral Parent Portal, on Fridays of weeks 3, 6 and 9,
  • showing interest in work brought home – talk about it and give encouragement and praise as much as possible,
  • attending regular meetings of the P&C Association, and
  • fostering high expectations and preparing them for positive participation in society.

Our History

Our area, now known as Lavington, was called Bungambrawatha, or “Homeland” by the Wiradjuri people. There is a long history of habitation prior to 1824, when the explorers Hume and Hovell were the first non-Indigenous people to pass through the area.

This region was a source of comfort and security for Wiradjuri people and provided the majority of their necessities, including tools, food, medicine, shelter, fibres, water, and items for trade.

On 16 October 1865 the Black Range School, with 27 pupils, opened at the north-west corner of Prune and Murphy streets. The school was moved to its present site, at the intersection of Jindera (Urana) Road and Bungambrawatha Creek, in 1882, and was later renamed Lavington Public School.
